Things were a little crazy (and a little lazy) the past week. My mom and sister came to visit from Texas! It’s fun to catch up, though in the electronic age there isn’t really much to catch up on I suppose. Thanks to Facebook and emails and unlimited long distance, it isn’t like we don’t get to share the important stuff. However, nothing beats actual live interaction, especially when kids are involved.

I love to get my fry on. Sure, I try to feed my family healthy foods. We have a garden that provides us with many of our vegetables; plus strawberries, grapes and apples grow in the yard. We don’t eat out all that often, but enough that my youngest knows to say “mmm” when he sees the Golden Arches or any given fast food joint. I watch Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and rejoice that our children’s private school serves primarily “homemade” foods.

I love to cook. No, really! I do! I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I love to eat. The problem of late is that I am no longer enjoying my cooking. I seem to be in a rut again. Nothing sounds good. Oh, have no fear. I am not wasting away or anything. I just can’t seem to put my finger on what it is that I would enjoy eating.

It seems safe to say that most of us, at point or another, have been heavier than we wanted to be. I say this because January, that great month of resolutions, is chock full of reminders that we wish we were kinder to our bodies. Ads for nicotine patches and gums prevail, and weight loss ads are downright unavoidable.

I really am not a snob. I am pretty laid back about most things. I know some people cannot abide the thought of used clothing. I have been sporting my garage sale Columbia winter coat for many seasons now (though it is now too big on me). I love hand me downs and think it is great when people give me homemade jam or books and magazines they already read. Our vehicles are old and paid for.

When I was a kid, we seldom went out for dinner. If we did, it was someone’s birthday, and it was memorable. We did not eat much fast food either. Sure, we lived about 30 minutes from what some would call civilization, so it made sense. My mom was a stay at home, and she cooked for us. It’s funny how I can remember eating chili with buttered crackers, and we would all watch Wheel of Fortune together in the evening. Fond childhood memories that don’t involve paper sacks, I guess.

I know we live in a youth obsessed culture, and it never fails to amaze me. Youth doesn’t have much to offer but energy, and well, youth. Sure, once we start waking up feeling hungover even though we never drank a drop of alcohol we start to miss what we have lost. The ability to eat what we want, wear what we want, be idiots, and pretty much always feel good. Definite perks, right?
