I really am not a snob.  I am pretty laid back about most things.  I know some people cannot abide the thought of used clothing.  I have been sporting my garage sale Columbia winter coat for many seasons now (though it is now too big on me).  I love hand me downs and think it is great when people give me homemade jam or books and magazines they already read.  Our vehicles are old and paid for.

When I was a kid, we seldom went out for dinner.  If we did, it was someone’s birthday, and it was memorable.  We did not eat much fast food either.  Sure, we lived about 30 minutes from what some would call civilization, so it made sense.  My mom was a stay at home, and she cooked for us.  It’s funny how I can remember eating chili with buttered crackers, and we would all watch Wheel of Fortune together in the evening.  Fond childhood memories that don’t involve paper sacks, I guess.

I know we live in a youth obsessed culture, and it never fails to amaze me.  Youth doesn’t have much to offer but energy, and well, youth.  Sure, once we start waking up feeling hungover even though we never drank a drop of alcohol we start to miss what we have lost.  The ability to eat what we want, wear what we want, be idiots, and pretty much always feel good.  Definite perks, right?

I used to be a real stickler when it came to nutrition.  I did not buy junk food.  I encouraged the kids to snack on cereal rather than potato chips.  This worked out pretty well until the kids went out into the world.  They discovered fruit snacks, and it was the beginning of the end.

My grandma warned me about men’s work.  “You keep lifting/shoveling/digging like you do, and you will feel it when you are my age.  That’s men’s work!”  She’s probably right, but I am stubborn and impatient, so I end up getting myself into all sorts of mischief I really shouldn’t (there was incident with replacing the toilet seal, and then installing laminate flooring while in my first trimester).
