My poor husband. He wanted to have a Super Bowl party of sorts. Mostly just having his family over and an excuse to break out the deep fryer. We aren’t really invested in any of the teams. His brothers are not sports fans. Our kids aren’t really old enough to sit still and watch a long winded sporting event. Me? Let me know when the commercials are on!

Toddlers are so entertaining! JD has reached a milestone with his speech, meaning I can understand more of what he says and not just intuitively know what he wants. He has started interacting with the tv, which I find hilarious. I was washing dishes when I heard Mickey Mouse ask “would you like to come inside my clubhouse?” JD says “no!” He will guess the Mouse-ka-tool though, and I am continually impressed with how bright he is. Okay, until he pulls the little step stool up to the counter and pries the lid off the cookie jar. Then his ingenuity is a tad aggravating.

Putting On Kindness

I would like to welcome Alicia as my guest today. I have been a fan of hers for years, way back to when MySpace was popular (ha ha!). I especially loved this piece on kindness. Too often the people I live with are wearing their “grumpy pants” rather than their “kindness boots.” It reminded me that setting a good example of treating others the way I want to be treated, well, it is a constant lesson. Demonstrating patience and kindness for those we cherish most is important, but it easily falls to the wayside with sibling rivalry and the antics of the witching hour. I am seldom the picture of patience or kindness when the boys decide that quiet reading before bedtime means “run through the house screaming and winding the toddler up”.

I know I am a jumpy person. I could blame it on growing up in Texas, where the occasional scorpion or more common fire ant made you wary. Lots of things are poisonous there. I brought home a present from Texas once, and apparently rode with a black widow spider all the way back to Michigan. That still gives me the willies just thinking about it.

I found myself having to take a drive on this blustery day. That is the way it goes. I make an appointment, and inclement weather follows. Overdue Pap smear finally going to get done? Hello, blizzard! So of course today was rainy and windy and downright chilly.

The Toilet Seat

We recently replaced our toilet seat. There wasn’t much wrong with the old one, to be honest. It was sturdy. It did the job required of it.

Except for one thing: the hinges. Oh dear God, the hinges. There were metal screws holding the hinges together. It got to the point where I didn’t know what was rusty water and what was, well, pee. Or a combination of the two. Being the only woman in the house, I knew the aim problem was not mine. JD still uses a potty shaped like a frog. So somehow, these screws and pieces were getting damp and nasty.

I will never forget the belly laugh I had when one of my larger patients on the orthopedic unit at the hospital told me “I am built for comfort, not speed.” I thought of that last night at soccer practice, when one of the dads was telling me how he was trying to steer his son toward football, explaining that their build was suited more toward such a game and speed was not their strong point.

JD has really taken a shine to reading lately. Not just paging through his board books, but actually bringing me books and telling me “wead!” True to his age, he really enjoys the same book over and over and over. I have read “Where Is Baby’s Pumpkin?” so many times in the past two days it has gone from cute to “good grief, let me dig out our old flap books for a change of pace”.
