I am a gift card-girl.  I like gift cards.  I give gift cards.  I don’t care if you’re a newborn baby or celebrating your 100th birthday.  Gift cards for everyone!  I don’t know what you already own.  I don’t know if your tastes have changed.  Honestly, if I start shopping for you… I really just end up shopping for myself.  So here’s a $25 gift card.  Go knock yourself out.

Today was the 1st grade’s Field Day at HRH’s school.  (For those of you new to B-Sting-speak, HRH is how I refer to my daughter.  AKA – Her Royal Highness)

I remember Field Day from my youth.  I hated it.  Every damned year.  It was supposed to be fun, exhilarating, and a great way to burn and run off energy.  Instead, for me, it was a long day of showcasing how uncoordinated, lanky, clumsy, and all-around unathletic I was.  I dreaded it and would try to think of excuses to get out of attending.  That heavy feeling of dank dread hung over me as I prepared HRH for her Field Day.  I kept my dark memories to myself as I slathered her with sunscreen and sent her on her way to school.  Surely, she would have a better experience?  After all, Daddy volunteered this year!  She got to ride to school in his cool, tricked out car.  She got to hug and kiss him whenever she wanted, all day.  And he worked one of the Field Stations!  How cool is that?!?

Last week Madison was off for Fall Break. Teachers were hand-in-hand, humming and skipping and throwing their heads back in laughter as SAHM’s were on their knees, holding their head in their hands…in complete despair. A week of glazed over eyes full of lifeless abandon…”So help me God!” I yelled on Monday (whilst still on my knees).

I always admire the tenacity of ‘special’ moms – those with a “non-traditional” life; one that presents a special set of challenges. Like the single mom (whether by choice or circumstance) who is mother, father, breadwinner, cheerleader, nursemaid and housekeeper all in one.   Or the mom of a special needs child who is mother, teacher, advocate, cheerleader and monitor, all in one.  In voicing awe or disbelief at their struggles and the hoops (on fire) they have to jump through, I always hear the same thing:  you do what you have to do to make things work.   My situation is not even as CLOSE to difficult as it is for these moms, so I offer no comparison when I say that NOW is my time to “do what I gotta do”.

I love the Olympic games! In a prior blog, I gave an outline of a multiweek Olympic Games session I’m doing with our homeschool group.  Well we had round one of the games and, for inquiring minds, here are some of the things we played.  Note that these are games I found in a variety of books and adapted to suit our needs: variety of ages, abilities, limited indoor space, etc.   Hope you too can use some of these outrageously funny games!
