For the most part, I love being a Stay at Home Mom. But, on occasion, being part of the “hey, today I can wear pajamas…again” club makes me want to scream. With my eldest being a “one hand on the hip…roll your eyes to the right…and sigh” chick-a-dee, and my youngest in the midst of a terrible bout of separation anxiety that makes my head want to explode, I think what I’m about to announce can be understood:

I will never forget the belly laugh I had when one of my larger patients on the orthopedic unit at the hospital told me “I am built for comfort, not speed.” I thought of that last night at soccer practice, when one of the dads was telling me how he was trying to steer his son toward football, explaining that their build was suited more toward such a game and speed was not their strong point.

Toddlers are amazing little critters, aren’t they? I am usually amazed with my interactions with actual critters. My cats want to go to bed shortly after my kids do, and meow to tell me they are ready. My chickens will hear the back door close and come running up to me if I try to close up their coop too early (and hey, I might have food). My Grams’ dog knows when they are going to go for a ride before she even grabs the car keys. So sure, it makes sense that little humans are pretty darn smart too, even if they cannot always demonstrate it.

I have joked in the past about sibling rivalry and jealousy. Sometimes it is so subtle that you do not even really notice it, like when my husband would hug and kiss me good bye. Tater would run up and wrap himself around my leg or wiggle between us to get in on the love fest. Other than that, it never really dawned on him to be jealous, even when a strange kid would end up plopping in my lap at the library to read a story.

Every mother, particularly new ones, discover a whole new realm of fear once they have given birth. I freaked out on the car ride home with my first born son. Every vehicle on the road was a speeding bullet headed toward my baby. I was a nervous wreck on the freeway. They don’t really warn you about that, even in “What to Expect” and they are great at giving expecting mothers things to worry about.

Call me crazy (most do I suspect) but I end up talking to the nicest people on the phone. Even when I was in college, I had a very long conversation with a woman trying to get me to switch phone companies. I was dodging an English assignment, and she was dodging cold calling more people. We ended up talking for nearly an hour about everything BUT the best long distance carrier.

There should be a support group for mothers of picky eaters. Heck, maybe there is. They probably meet at a fast food joint with a play area and bemoan how their child will eat that processed dreck and turn up their nose at food that actually contains something besides fat and sodium. I just avoid those play areas because it means my kids will ooze green mucus for six weeks straight.

Let me preface this with: I am in no way a professional barber. I am just cheap.

I cut my family’s hair. I even trim my own bangs, though I haven’t lately. The woman who cuts my hair (3-4 times a year, whether it needs it or not) gets a little frownie line between her eyes when she sees I have taken the scissors to my hair. I figure it is safe to say I am not exceptionally good at it.

Things were a little crazy (and a little lazy) the past week. My mom and sister came to visit from Texas! It’s fun to catch up, though in the electronic age there isn’t really much to catch up on I suppose. Thanks to Facebook and emails and unlimited long distance, it isn’t like we don’t get to share the important stuff. However, nothing beats actual live interaction, especially when kids are involved.
