My poor husband. He wanted to have a Super Bowl party of sorts. Mostly just having his family over and an excuse to break out the deep fryer. We aren’t really invested in any of the teams. His brothers are not sports fans. Our kids aren’t really old enough to sit still and watch a long winded sporting event. Me? Let me know when the commercials are on!

Toddlers are so entertaining! JD has reached a milestone with his speech, meaning I can understand more of what he says and not just intuitively know what he wants. He has started interacting with the tv, which I find hilarious. I was washing dishes when I heard Mickey Mouse ask “would you like to come inside my clubhouse?” JD says “no!” He will guess the Mouse-ka-tool though, and I am continually impressed with how bright he is. Okay, until he pulls the little step stool up to the counter and pries the lid off the cookie jar. Then his ingenuity is a tad aggravating.

For the most part, I love being a Stay at Home Mom. But, on occasion, being part of the “hey, today I can wear pajamas…again” club makes me want to scream. With my eldest being a “one hand on the hip…roll your eyes to the right…and sigh” chick-a-dee, and my youngest in the midst of a terrible bout of separation anxiety that makes my head want to explode, I think what I’m about to announce can be understood:

Once upon a time, I lived in Houston and went to daycare. In hindsight I have to figure that it was a pretty cool daycare because we often went to the roller rink after school. Most of my memories of that time are vague, because I was pretty young. I do remember a battle over spinach, and to this day I do not eat greens that have been canned or cooked beyond recognition. Bygones.

I would like to welcome Alicia as my guest today. I have been a fan of hers for years, way back to when MySpace was popular (ha ha!). I especially loved this piece on kindness. Too often the people I live with are wearing their “grumpy pants” rather than their “kindness boots.” It reminded me that setting a good example of treating others the way I want to be treated, well, it is a constant lesson. Demonstrating patience and kindness for those we cherish most is important, but it easily falls to the wayside with sibling rivalry and the antics of the witching hour. I am seldom the picture of patience or kindness when the boys decide that quiet reading before bedtime means “run through the house screaming and winding the toddler up”.

It’s been a while since I have had a chance to post. I began substitute teaching in the fall. Some of my dear teacher friends pointed out to me that perhaps having my photo right there with some of my posts was not the best idea. Blogging about work was a definite no-no. Chances are good at some point I have written something that would offend someone, but that really is nothing new. I found myself with a wicked case of writer’s block.

No, those aren’t maggots. It’s just rice.

You would automatically assume that I was in the kitchen….but the area being scrutinized was my bathtub. Why was there rice on the side of the bathtub? Well, if you’ve been a mom as long as I have, you just don’t ask those questions anymore. Sure, when you had more than four brain cells, you would have turned this into a Sherlock Holmes-worthy whodunit but these days…..maybe you just don’t want to know or even care. You need to preserve those precious remaining brain cells for more important endeavors, such as killing them with a glass of wine at the end of the week while chatting with your best friend about nothing in particular.

…quite contrary.

Every day seems like the same old day around here. I’m not complaining, but my ADD isn’t amused. It works to get the creative juices flowing though. So, today we started experimenting with growing fruits and veggies from root and seed. Our kitchen window gets pretty decent light and we are now using our ledge for more than the kids trying desperately to sit on it. As long as the cat doesn’t get mad, and knock things down, our experiments should keep the oldest child entertained for about 10 minutes in the morning. Maybe more if she wants to journal about how the green onions have sprouted and grown in 3 days! Which she has.
