From the time I learned what toxic chemicals were toiling to our climate, I immediately started using up my old commercial products and looking for a way to go green.  For anyone who lives alone and isn’t a clean-freak, this is not a fast process, but I’m trying.  As one product is used up, it is replaced with a non-toxic product like white vinegar and baking soda.  To see just what I had, I took all my cleaning products and placed them in boxes on a shelf in my utility room.  This was also to keep them out of reach of a curious toddler.

I was amazed at how many such products I had accumulated over the years.  Duplicates of some products of years past, like the Barkeep scouring powder I found in the duplex I rented when I moved here in 1988!   Gosh, this makes me sound like a slob, but I’m not.  It just takes so long to use up and I kind of enjoy the reminiscences when I see that can.   I do feel proud every time I can put an empty container in the “hazmat” bag to be taken to Cash for Trash days.

At any rate, my going green is coming along nicely, except for eradicating mildew without using chlorine bleach.  Specifically on the tile surround of my shower.

Surely some of you very clever and environmentally savvy folks out there have a solution for killing mildew with non-toxic solutions.

Would  you be so kind to share them?

I confess that I cannot live without my bleach. I’m sure I’ve read of other less toxic solutions but I can’t recall them now.

I’m curious about “Cash for Trash” days. Care to blog about that?

Cash for Trash, a great way to get rid of all your toxic products: e.g. aerosole cans (wonder if they raise their eyebrows and my Redi-Whip cans in with my toxic chemicals, paint cans, electronics, oil cans, anything that really shouldn’t go into the landfill. I’m trying to save the planet for your children and my grandchildren.
Cash for Trash is held twice a year in April and November on a Saturday at the collection center off Appleyard Dr. I love going there to witness the comaraderie of all the county and city workers from different departments all working together and all being so congenial.

BONUS: If you bring along a utility bill to prove you’re a resident, you get a choice of the low energy bulbs or a coupon for $5 off a utility bill! I always save mine for the middle of summer with a/c bills or like this month with a biggggg bill from the freezing winter weather.

        Great idea, no?
