We’ve been working with a poetry unit this semester learning all kinds of poetry styles.   We have also been enjoying books of poems by Jack Prelutsky - a master wordsmith for kids!  His work inspired a fun project;  we decided to collaborate on a poem where we each wrote a stanza.  Here are the amusing results.

I SWALLOWED A RAINBOW

circle-of-hands

Today, I swallowed a rainbow
I hope I’ll be okay.
I told my mom who said, “That’s silly!
Now go outside to play.”

When I went outside to play
The rainbow didn’t agree
It got down in my belly
And my belly grumbled at me.

I felt a burp come bubbling forth
And much to my surprise
A stream of bright red light poured out
Before my very eyes!

When I went to brush my teeth
And smiled to check my smile,
A pond or orange light came out
And stuck there for a while.

Then came yellow
Zip! Zam! Zoom!
It bounced off the ceiling
And filled up the room.

I went to my bedroom
Out came green
It was a good thing
Only I had seen!

Because think, for a minute:
What would YOU do
If you saw me running
And throwing up blue?!

I went to the kitchen
To get a drink
Out came indigo
Quick as a wink!

I held my breath
Knowing what was to come
Violet came out
Phew! I was done.
