…quite contrary.

Every day seems like the same old day around here. I’m not complaining, but my ADD isn’t amused. It works to get the creative juices flowing though. So, today we started experimenting with growing fruits and veggies from root and seed. Our kitchen window gets pretty decent light and we are now using our ledge for more than the kids trying desperately to sit on it. As long as the cat doesn’t get mad, and knock things down, our experiments should keep the oldest child entertained for about 10 minutes in the morning. Maybe more if she wants to journal about how the green onions have sprouted and grown in 3 days! Which she has.

The green onions (on the left) took exactly 3 days to grow. Look for healthy roots when shopping for green onions at the store. Cut the white part (with the root) from the rest of the green onion, and place it (root side down) in a glass jar slightly filled with water, in your windowsill. And, wah-lah! This is what should happen.

We are now experimenting with cut celery…and seeing how to sprout seeds for planting. (Those are avocado seeds in a glass, in the center.)

Has anyone else experimented like this? Would love to hear about what you did…and outcomes!

  1. Surly Mom says:

We used to do avocado seeds. We would put toothpicks in them to hold them on the rim of the cup so they are only partially submerged. The roots would then start growing down.

You can try potatoes. Cut the eyes out with some potato around it and put it in some soil. Or just do what I do and leave a bag in the cupboard, forget about it and voila….sprouting potatoes. Oh, that’s just bad housekeeping. ;-)

    • Surly…Surly…Surly. I’ve missed you. :)

I just threw the avocado seeds in the glass of water. lol. Lazy I think. Too stressed out that we would be rushed to the ER with toothpicks sticking out of our hands. Somewhere I heard that only male…or is it female…avocado plants/tees…bear fruit. I’ve been looking to see if I can tell which is which… but… :! Potatoes? I laugh. I think I am sprouting some in the cupboard right now too!
