Oh my, it has been HOT here.  I was raised in Central Texas, so I tend to scoff at our summers here.  When we had the new furnace installed and they asked if we wanted central air conditioning, I said “no way!”  Truly, we don’t need it except for the rare weeks like this one.  We have a nearly constant breeze out here on the “prairie” and a nice shade tree in the back yard.  We also have two window units to make life tolerable when a heat wave such as this hits.  I keep thinking the kids are going to find a puddle in front of the garage, with nothing left but the tank top and shorts I was wearing.

I LIKE to be outside in the summer.  I wouldn’t want to have to hide indoors from the glorious reprieve of freezing temperatures and snow.  I enjoy fresh air wafting through the house and sunshine pouring in through the windows.  Too often we get no sunshine, when Kid Rock (from Detroit) sings in our head “I haven’t seen the sun shine in three damn days”.  Except that is lowballing it.  We can go way longer without seeing the sun!

I was getting ready to tackle painting the garage (ongoing project) when my husband shot me a desperate look and asked if I would cut his hair.  His hair is gloriously thick for a man in his 40s, and it really did need a trim.  I pulled out the clippers and began to hack away.  “Cut it short!  I am burning up!” he tells me.

The breeze rose up just right and doused me with his hair, right down the sweaty front of my tank top.  I was now sporting a hairy chest that Burt Reynolds in his heyday could be proud of.

My man left sheared like a sheep (which breaks my heart because I love his hair).  No matter, since I was WEARING it all.  I could see his point about it being rather hot.  My eldest then came up and said he wanted an army haircut.  The middle child ran away.

As I showered off the Sasquatch costume, I thought of how Hubby had once bemoaned that my hair kept getting shorter and shorter with each child.  I was never really into my hair, so it being long was more of a laziness thing than an actual preference.  It ended up chin level or so because it was simply easier to care for.  Ok, and I had a misguided attempt at short hair and learned the hard way that it takes way more effort to make it look good.

I guess hair is in the eye of the beholder.  Hubby hates his having his hair longer because it holds the heat in.  I think blowing hot air on your head in the summer time is surely a sign of masochism.  It is only as long as it is because I can pull it back in a ponytail, complete with the abhorred “scrunchie”.  Or it gets tucked under a baseball cap.

Seriously.  If it is 93 degrees, I am NOT blowing hot air on my head to attempt to style my hair.  It will end up sweaty and looking like I never tried to begin with.  That whole cost-benefit ratio?  Way too much cost.  Ditto for eye make up these days.

Poor JD.  I haven’t cut his hair yet, since he is getting the most darling curls.  Ok, mostly when he too is sweating like a pig.  I am sure if he could form the words, he too would tell me to cut it all off, already!  I am boiling under all this hair!

I know I should cut his hair.  He would be more comfortable, and I would have less work what with him using his hair as a napkin and all.

But it is so damn cute!

And in my defense, he gets to run around sans diaper in this weather.  That has to help more than short hair!

Love works it magic though.  You adore your baby even though they come to you saying “mama” and reeking to high heaven with a low riding diaper.  Your hubby gives you the eyebrow wiggle and asks if you are busy later, even though you obviously need another application of deodorant and have a chest hairy enough to be in Playgirl circa 1977.

Is it hot in here?  Or is it just me?
