Things were a little crazy (and a little lazy) the past week.  My mom and sister came to visit from Texas!  It’s fun to catch up, though in the electronic age there isn’t really much to catch up on I suppose.  Thanks to Facebook and emails and unlimited long distance, it isn’t like we don’t get to share the important stuff.  However, nothing beats actual live interaction, especially when kids are involved.

I was talking with my sister recently, and she commented “we sure do know how to make some work for ourselves, don’t we?”  I laughed at the time, but that phrase haunted me for a few weeks.

Summer vacation has arrived.  Sadly, summer weather has not.  The squabbling had reached that level where I was going to either lose my mind, or put their snow suits on them in May and send them outside to play in the gale force northerly wind.

When I was a kid, we seldom went out for dinner.  If we did, it was someone’s birthday, and it was memorable.  We did not eat much fast food either.  Sure, we lived about 30 minutes from what some would call civilization, so it made sense.  My mom was a stay at home, and she cooked for us.  It’s funny how I can remember eating chili with buttered crackers, and we would all watch Wheel of Fortune together in the evening.  Fond childhood memories that don’t involve paper sacks, I guess.

I have vague memories of grocery shopping with my mother when I was a child.  She somehow ended up taking an elderly woman who needed a ride to the store.  Kids got a free cookie from the bakery.  I also remember that the bagger would help us out to our van to unload the groceries for us.
